The mobility services for the elderly in rural areas are mainly funded by state or communal institutions collaborating with private companies/social entrepreneurs, in the context of active aging. Here are some examples from Europe, the USA and Japan.
(since 2009; currently 150+ local offices)
(since 1995; currently operating in 13 federal states in the USA)
(since 2019; Osaka, Japan)
- Since 2014, Yahama Motor Co., Ltd. has been collaborating with local communities all over Japan and testing – also autonomous driving – its golfcart-based, battery-driven, low-speed vehicles for a last-mile mobility solution.
- One example is ‘Kuru-Kuru’ program, a part of ‘Smart-Aging City’ project by a public-private-academic partnership.
- The program is operated by the elderly citizen themselves, that contributes to their self-esteem, physical and mental empowerment, and community building. Also, it is more cost-effective compared to outsourcing.
- Running costs and lack of volunteer drivers, however, are the current issues to continue the program.
