ELDERLY FRIENDLY MOBILTY

While the planned strict license regulations of the EU would increasingly hinder the elderly to stay mobile and independent, many older adults do not utilize alternative transportation even if it is available, for five main reasons: acceptability, affordability, adaptability, accessibility, and safety. Older adults have specific needs and preferences regarding mobility.

A study regarding ideal transportation tools for the elderly indicates the following ten needs and preferences to fulfil:

1.   Time autonomy – To go out whenever they want

2.   Walkability – To avoid walking or take their walking speed into account when planning trips

3.   Crowd avoidance – To avoid crowded routes and places

4.   Incline avoidance – To avoid hills

5.   Weather consideration – To avoid going out when the weather is hot or wet

6.   Dark avoidance – To avoid going out when it’s dark

7.   Winter obstacle avoidance – To avoid icy sidewalks or icy roads

8.   Amenities inclusion – To inform about relevant amenities on their route (toilet, bench, bus shelter, public telephone, etc)

9.   Taxi driver’s information – Who to pick them up, the type of car, especially for a taxi

10.    Support affordance – To offer support (providing company, helping with bags and to get into, onto, and out of or off vehicles)

If mobility services fulfil these conditions and are safe, easy to access and affordable, older people will be more likely to accept new alternative mobility options.

高齢者に優しいモビリティとは？

EU が検討する運転免許規制の強化は、高齢者の移動と自立をさらに妨げることになるだろう。一方で多くの高齢者は、たとえ代替モビリティの利用が可能でも、それを利用していない。その主な原因は（自身の代替モビリティに対する）受容性、料金、（自身のニーズへの代替モビリティの）適応性、アクセスしやすさ、安全性だという。高齢者は移動に関して特有のニーズや嗜好を持っているからだ。

高齢者にとって理想的な移動手段をテーマとした某研究によれば、以下の10のニーズと嗜好を満たすことが重要だとしている：

1.      時間の自律性：好きなときに外出できる

2.      歩きやすさ：歩くことを極力避ける、又は歩く速度を考慮している

3.      混雑回避：混雑したルートや場所を避ける

4.      坂道の回避

5.      天候への配慮：暑い日や雨天時の外出を避ける

6.      暗さの回避：あたりが暗い時間帯の外出を避ける

7.      冬の障害回避：凍結した歩道や道路を避ける

8.      アメニティの情報：ルート上にある関連アメニティの情報提供（トイレ、ベンチ、バス待合所、公衆電話など）

9.      タクシー運転手の情報：送迎者はどんな人か、車種など

10.   援助が可能であること：付添い、荷物持ち、乗降時の介助など

これらを満たし、かつ安全性が確保され、利用しやすい料金のモビリティサービスに簡単にアクセス出来れば、高齢者も新たな代替モビリティを受け入れやすくなるはずだ。
