Designing Dreams: Tyrone’s Journey and the Evolution of Innovative Prosthetics

During Tyrone’s visit to ED², he requested a graphic design for the surface of his prosthesis. Our designers presented several ideas, and Tyron selected two concepts created by Nathan Groot and Yung Presciucci. Nathan’s design reflected Tyrone’s personality, incorporating his aspirations and featuring images of the Paris skyline and the South African flag. This design was intended to be showcased at the Paris Paralympics. Unfortunately, we were saddened to learn that Paralympic bronze medallist Tyrone Pillay announced his retirement from competitive athletics after he was not selected for the South African team due to a limited number of spots, just before the games.

The second concept, Yung’s geometric design, was inspired by the bold, symbolic tattoos of the Haka, aiming to enhance the athlete’s powerful image. This strong graphic theme aligned well with Tyron’s vision and featured the colour gold, symbolizing the medal he aspired to win. This prosthesis design was displayed at Toyota House during the Olympics and Paralympics. When I visited Toyota House, I was delighted to see that it garnered significant attention from visitors, with many stopping to take photos.

In June, we had the opportunity to visit Gazoo Racing Europe (GR-E) in Cologne, where we witnessed real para-sports innovation and toured the confidential workshop and backstage areas of the racing cars. It was an exciting experience, especially seeing the behind-the-scenes of Gazoo Racing. This visit helped establish connections with the AI-powered racing team, who collaborated with us on an experimental project scheduled for September 2024.

Tyrone also managed to visit GR-E during his busy preparation and competition schedule. We shared the outcome of our newly designed prosthesis concepts, where our modellers had created small-scale models to demonstrate the potential of these innovative designs. Tyrone showed photos of our proposals to his network of Paralympic prosthesis creators, and their positive reactions were overwhelming. We were thrilled to see that the concept exceeded Tyrone’s expectations.

As we move forward, we are exploring further opportunities where our designers’ creativity can shine. With these two successful projects—the graphic design and prosthesis concept—concluded, we are eager to collaborate on future projects and opportunities.

タイロンはED²を訪れた際、パリで使う義肢の表面のグラフィック・デザインをリクエストしました。 ED²デザイナーが提示したアイデアの中でタイロンが選んだのは、ネイサン・グルートとユング・プレシウッチの2つのデザインでした。ネイサンのデザインは、タイロンの個性と彼の願いを表したもので、パリのスカイラインと南アフリカの国旗をイメージしています。このデザインはパリ・パラリンピックで、タイロン出場の際に披露される予定でした。しかし残念なことに、パラリンピック銅メダリストのタイロン・ピレイは、限られた出場枠の中、南アフリカ代表に選ばれず、大会直前に競技からの引退を表明しました。

2つ目のコンセプトであるユングの幾何学的なデザインは、ハカの大胆で象徴的な刺青にインスパイアされたもので、アスリートの力強いイメージを表しています。この力強いグラフィックはタイロンのビジョンと合致し、彼が目指していた金メダル獲得を象徴する、ゴールドの色を採用しています。 これらの義肢デザインは、オリンピックとパラリンピックの期間中、トヨタハウス（公式モビリティパートナーのトヨタが関係者用に今後の戦略・展望を展示する他、パラ選手の家族支援など、様々な目的に使用）に展示されました。トヨタハウスを訪れた際、多くの来場者が足を止めて写真を撮るなど、注目度の高さを実感しました。

6月には、ケルンにあるガズーレーシングヨーロッパ（GR-E）を訪問し、本物のパラスポーツイノベーションを目の当たりにし、レーシングカーの機密作業場や舞台裏を見学する機会を得ました。特にガズーレーシングの舞台裏を見ることができたのは、エキサイティングな経験でした。秒単位の速さを競う厳しいレースを最適化するためにAIを使っていることも学び、F1から撤退はしましたが、ドイツのエンジニアが丹精込めて作ったレースカーも見ることができました。この訪問ではAIスペシャリストとのつながりも生まれ、9月に予定したプロジェクトで協力してもらうことが出来ました。

タイロンもまた、準備と競技の多忙なスケジュールの合間を縫ってGR-Eに立ち寄ってくれました。 私たちは新たに設計した義肢のコンセプトを持参し、モデラーが３D プリンターで作成した１/４サイズの模型で、その革新的デザインの可能性をTGR関係者に披露しました。コンセプトは期待以上に完成度が高く、ロジャーやモリスは今後もコラボを続けたいと言ってくれました。タイロンは後日、そのコンセプトの写真を彼のネットワークのパラリンピック義肢製作者たちに見せたのですが、圧倒的にポジティブな反応だったそうです。私たちは、このコンセプトがタイロンの期待を上回るものであったこと、また、関係者もコラボに積極的であることを、とても嬉しく思いました。

私たちは今後も、デザイナーの創造性を発揮できる機会をさらに探っていきます。グラフィックデザインと義肢のコンセプトという2つのプロジェクトは大成功でした。今後も新しいプロジェクトやコラボの機会に積極的に参画していきたいと考えました。
