JAM: A Dialogue Between Material and Sound in Design

Exploring the Fusion of Tactile and Acoustic Sensations to Inspire New Experiences in Mobility

JAM is a unique collaboration between two designers with distinct creative paths. Jérémy, an artist and dancer, and Marie, an engineer passionate about sound, began their creative dialogue at ENSCI Les Ateliers in Paris. Today, though geographically separated between Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Helsinki, their collaboration continues through remote exchanges, punctuated by intensive annual workshops. This distance pushes them to reinvent their creative process and draw inspiration from their respective environments.

Their design approach is primarily focused on materials. Unlike the conventional process where materials are chosen based on the project, JAM reverses this logic. They first explore the material, allowing the applications and forms to emerge from this experimentation. A standout example of their work is the *All Over Cork Panels* project, composed of sawdust and cork grains pressed and colored with reactive dyes. This project won the 2024 Quercus Suber Design competition, showcasing the aesthetic and functional richness of their panels.

One of their signature objects is the *Tdrop* table, which is lightweight, modular, and highlights the wood through a unique dyeing process.

JAM goes beyond aesthetics; they also explore the interaction between material and sound to propose immersive experiences that take the visitor into creative and mindful states. How can a material evoke a sound atmosphere or tell its sensory story? This research opens up fascinating perspectives on the relationship between touch, sound, and the immersive experience of design.

This sensory exploration is really inspiring and that’s something we could also explore at Toyota. Connecting material with a subtle sound dimension could create immersive and novel experiences for users, while adding a new layer of depth to our product design.

JAMは、アーティスト兼ダンサーのジェレミーと、サウンドに情熱を注ぐエンジニアのマリーという、独創的な道を歩んできた2人がパリのENSCI Les Ateliersで始めたユニークなコラボレーションです。現在、サン・ポール・ド・ヴァンスとヘルシンキという地理的隔たりはあるものの、年一回の集中ワークショップとオンラインを通じてコラボを続けています。またこの距離感が、彼らの創作プロセスを刷新し、お互いの環境からインスピレーションを引き出す原動力となっているのです。

彼らのデザイン・アプローチは、主に素材に重点を置いています。プロジェクトに基づく素材の選択という従来プロセスとは逆の論理をとり、まず素材を探求し、その実験から用途や形が生まれるというアプローチです。その優れた一例であるAll Over Cork Panelsでは、おがくずとコルクの粒をプレスし、反応染料で着色し、自然乾燥させることで、様々な色のコルクタイルのようなオブジェクトをデザイン。同プロジェクトは2024年ミズナラ・スーバー・デザインコンペで優勝し、彼らのパネルの美的かつ機能的豊かさが高く評価されました。またこの作品は、ED²からほど近いイエールデザインパレード（国際的デザインイベント）でも賞を獲得しています。ED²ではCSRの一環として地産コルクの用途を広げるNPOを支援していますが、彼らとのコラボでJAMのコルクタイルが生まれたのです。

さらにJAMの代表的オブジェのひとつである*Tdrop*テーブルは、軽量でモジュール化されており、ユニークな染色プロセスにより、木の年輪の自然の美しさを際立たせています。

JAMは美学にとどまらず、素材と音の相互作用を探求し、スタジオを訪れる人々を創造的でマインドフルな状態へ導く没入型体験を提案しています。素材はどのように音の雰囲気を呼び起こし、その感覚を物語ることができるのか。この研究は、触感や音とデザインの没入型体験との関係について、魅惑的な視点を生み出しています。
