AI programs released last year (DALL-E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion) enable amateurs to create complex, abstract or photorealistic works simply by typing a few words into a text box. And an AI-generated artwork won first place at a fine arts competition in the U.S. That has caused fierce controversy from artists including many ethical issues, such as:

• Plagiarism - AI programs are explicitly trained on working artists to mimic them and use the images of copyrighted artworks. There is currently no law to disclose an artist’s work used.

• Jobs of artists at risk - Especially smaller-budget jobs that up-and-coming artists often rely on.

• Concepts and ideas become more important than artistic skills.

• Deep fake by photorealistic outputs, like the Russian propaganda video showing Zelensky telling Ukraine people to surrender.

• Images of inappropriate or illegal subjects can be generated due to lack of regulations.

画像生成AIはクリエイターの脅威となるか？

「芸術とは、内面で感じたことを具現化する行為。真の芸術は最終的な作品よりも、その創造的プロセスにある。単にボタンを押して画像を生成するのは、創造的プロセスではない。」（ロブ・ビダルフ、イラストレーター）

昨年リリースされた数々の画像生成AIは、膨大な数の既存アーティストの作品をベースに、キーワード入力だけでプロ並みの作品を出力できるものだ。そしてAIによる作品が米国の某美術コンテストで1位を獲得するに及び、アーティストの間で激しい論争が巻き起こっている。その焦点は盗用・著作権侵害、AIによるアーティストの淘汰、将来は芸術的スキルよりコンセプトが重要になるという不安だ。加えて、フォトリアリスティックな出力によるディープフェイク、規制不在のため児童ポルノの様な不適切・違法な画像が生成されるという、社会的弊害も危惧されている。

PRO-AI OPINIONS

Pro-AI creators argue that artists have always drawn influence from other artists and every medium, and AI programs do the same. Even in case of mimic, such work is likely to point back to the original artist. Also, AI art tools open the doors of artistic expression for both existing artists and the untalented at visual art. And human creativity is still required to come up with the right prompts: “What makes art good isn’t that a human physically made it, but rather the idea that made it happen.”

There are now entire marketplaces to buy and sell prompts to create an artwork, suggesting that concepts and ideas would become more important than artistic skills.

WEAKNESSES OF AI-GENERATED ART

AI-generated artworks lack, however, quality and nuance and show some oddities like empty faces. Critics say that AI-generated art looks soulless, similarly polished, kitsch aesthetic, inauthentic and cheap. Also, it is crucial that the art tells a story and invokes spirit. But AI has no emotional intelligence to create a story, and storytelling may be the biggest weakness of AI-generated works, as well as lack of creativity and personalization, for AI uses existing data and cannot generate fresh ideas or original content.

AI賛成派の意見

一方AI賛成派は、アーティストは常に他者の作品や様々な媒体から影響を受けており、AIの画像生成もそれと同じだと主張する。また画像生成AIは、アーティストと素人の両者に芸術的表現の可能性を開くもの。そして適切なキーワードを思いつくには、やはり人間の創造力が必要だ。「作品の良し悪しは、人が作ったかどうかではなく、アイデアで決まる」とし、芸術的スキルより作品を生み出すコンセプトを重視している。優れたキーワードの売買が行われるという現象も、その表れだ。

AI生成作品の弱点

しかしAIによる作品は、概してニュアンスが欠け質に劣り、人物の顔の表現なども奇妙だ。また「魂の欠如、キッチュな美感、偽物の安っぽさ」も指摘されている。アートは「物語を伝え、精神を喚起する」のが重要だが、感情を持たないAIが生成する作品には、物語性、創造性、個性が欠如している。既存作品のデータを使うため、新鮮なアイデアや独自コンテンツの創造は不可能だ。

BENEFITS OF USING AI FOR CREATIVES

Even so, AI programs also bring several benefits for creatives: it speeds up the creating process, can be used as an inspiration generator, helps organize detailed outlines and key points to get started. It may be the biggest benefit to use AI as a tool to flesh out ideas and variations before fully working on a physical object all the way.

POTENTIAL ADVANTAGES FOR CREATORS

In contrast to AI-generated art, originally created art stands out even more, for people appreciate the story behind the artwork and time, energy, thoughts dedicated to it. And in response to AI, traditional media may be re-evaluated and even more appreciated. The recent trend of using digital cameras among the gen Z is one example (1).

HOW TO COPE WITH AI-GENERATED ART

AI-art generators are to exist and be further developed, and it is inevitable for human creators to cope with them. Then how?

• Take advantage of AI – Let AI take over “uncreative” or repetitive works and save time to get your creative process far advanced and refined. Get inspired from “unexpected” results or perspectives AI generates.

• Storytelling, fresh ideas and personalization – the area where AI cannot compete with humans.

• Express yourself – Each creative has his/her own history and value system, from where his/her

creativity originates. AI can imitate your artworks, but not your source of creativity. In the end, genuine creativity still lies in humans. Like handcrafted works in contrast to industrial products, original art works would be always and even more appreciated in the future.

クリエイターがAIを使うメリット

それでも、画像生成AIはクリエイターにとっても有用な面がある。創作プロセスのスピードアップやインスピレーションを得るためのツール、そして最大の利点は、実際のオブジェに取り組む前にアイデアやバリエーションを具体化できることだ。またコンテンツ生成AIは、コンセプト作りの段階で、全体の枠組みやキーポイントの詳細を整理するのに役立つ。

本物志向の高まりが追い風に？

将来、AI生成作品との対比で、クリエイターによる本物のアートがより一層際立つと思われる。作品の背景にあるストーリー、作品に捧げられた時間・エネルギー・魂という要素が高く評価されるからだ。それに伴い、従来メディアの再発見もあり得る。最近のZ世代のデジタルカメラブーム^［1］はその一例だ。

AIとの共生

では、今後発展を続ける画像生成AIに、私達デザイナーはどう対処すべきなのか？まず重要なのは、今のAIに何ができるのかを把握し、クリエイティブなデザインプロセスの中でAIを効率的に利用することだ。例えば、さほど創造的でないプロセスはAIに任せ、クリエイティブな部分に注力することで、より高度な結果が生まれる。AI生成アートの意外性からインスピレーションを得ることもあるだろう。そしてAIに対抗するには、物語性、新鮮なアイデア、個性がカギとなる。その創造力の原点は、AIが模倣できない、デザイナー個々の経験と価値観、即ち人生そのものだ。
