Forging the Future Generation Design School Partnership Project – Toyota ED² × ISD RUBIKA

Toyota Europe’s design centre invited students from ISD RUBIKA to explore the future of mobility through a design brief entitled “Vision.” Bringing together three teams of four to five students, the project was conceived as an open platform for experimentation an opportunity to question established conventions, explore new territories and imagine alternative possibilities for the mobility of tomorrow.

Throughout the project, we followed each team closely as their ideas evolved from initial observations and abstract concepts into increasingly defined design proposals. Working alongside Yung Prescuitti, our role was not simply to guide the students towards a particular outcome, but to challenge their thinking and help them unlock the potential within their own ideas.

We encouraged them to look beyond the obvious, question their first assumptions and explore multiple directions before committing to a final concept. Through regular exchanges and design reviews, we supported them in developing a stronger narrative, sharpening their intentions and translating early ideas into more coherent and compelling proposals.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the project was the diversity of the results. Starting from exactly the same brief, the three teams developed three distinctly different visions of the future. Each approached the challenge from its own perspective, demonstrating how a shared design question can lead to remarkably different interpretations when explored through individual creative lenses.

Creativity was evident throughout the entire process from the first sketches and conceptual experiments to the more resolved stages of development. Meeting the students regularly gave us a valuable insight into their way of thinking, and we were consistently impressed by their curiosity, energy and commitment. Their willingness to explore unfamiliar territory often led to unexpected ideas and new perspectives.

The exchange was also reciprocal. While our role was to challenge and support the students, their fresh thinking encouraged us to look at familiar questions from different angles. Such dialogue between emerging designers and an established design studio can be particularly valuable: it creates space for ideas to move in unexpected directions and allows both sides to question what mobility might become.

For the final stage of the partnership, we worked alongside our Design Director, Lance Scott, and travelled to Valenciennes to attend the students’ final presentations. Seeing the projects presented in their final form was a rewarding conclusion to the collaboration, revealing how each team had transformed an open-ended brief into a distinctive and personal vision.

More than simply a student project, “Vision” became an exploration of how design education and professional practice can come together to challenge perspectives, exchange ideas and imagine what lies beyond the present.

ED² × ISD RUBIKA
