PORTO DESIGN BIENNALE

Collaboration with Lexus Portugal x ED² x ESAD

for Porto Design Biennale 2025

Lexus Portugal has been a long-standing and valued partner. Previously, Laurent Bouzige was invited to participate in a Mobility Talk during Porto Design Biennale 2024, contributing to Lexus’s discussion on mobility.

This year, Ken Billes was invited to supervise student projects focused on developing activities for ALADI, an institution supporting people with mental disabilities in Matosinhos, Porto.

In May, a three-day workshop was organized by the Porto Design Biennale team. Four students from IED Milan and six students from ESAD collaborated to study the needs of ALADI users and caregivers. On the first day, the students visited ALADI and conducted interviews with both users and caregivers. On the second day, we welcomed A+N, a design duo known for their Breathing Lights project presented at Milan Design Week. They shared both their work and their design methodology with the students.

Over the course of the workshop, students developed concepts based on the topics they selected and insights gained during the field research. On the final day, they presented their ideas. Throughout the entire program, Ken Billes supported the students by helping them refine and reshape their concepts using a design process he is deeply familiar with.

Although the students had only two days to develop their ideas, the outcomes were highly meaningful, grounded in a Genchi Genbutsu approach through direct field research with ALADI caregivers and users. One student created a huggable cushion using a bicycle air pump, allowing users to feel a gentle, breathing-like movement when embraced.

Another pair of students proposed a digital communication tool connecting Porto Design Biennale visitors with ALADI users. The concept featured connected screens in which sound from both sides is transformed into visual effects, enabling an intuitive and inclusive form of interaction.

One particularly compelling idea involved using materials found on the beach—such as driftwood—to create a vertical, framed wind chime. ALADI users could touch the elements and enjoy the sounds they produce. The student envisioned installing this piece in ALADI’s long corridors, which are currently underutilized and have a hospital-like atmosphere.

The final concept focused on creating knitting experiences for ALADI users. This frugal yet effective solution allows users to enjoy the tactile quality of yarn, while the repetitive hand movements provide focus and a calming rhythm.

With Ken Billes’s guidance, the cushion concept was developed into a prototype and tested with ALADI users. The response was extremely positive and heart-warming.

The organizers of the Porto Design Biennale were very pleased with the outcome of this collaboration and received a great deal of positive feedback on the project.

ポルトデザインビエンナーレに向けた

レクサス・ポルトガル × ED² × ESAD のコラボ

レクサス・ポルトガルには、数年前からED²のパートナーとして、ED²デザイナーが社外で活躍できる場を設けて頂いています。前回は、ローラン・ブージジュがポルトデザインビエンナーレ2024の「モビリティ・トーク」に招かれ、トヨタ＆レクサスの新モビリティに関する議論を展開しました。

今年度はケン・ビエスが、ポルト市のマトジーニョスにある知的障害者支援機関ALADI向けの活動を開発する学生プロジェクトの指導を担当しました。

5月には、ポルトデザインビエンナーレチームによる3日間のワークショップが開かれました。IEDミラノ校の学生4名とESADの学生6名が協力し、ALADIの利用者と介護者のニーズを調査しました。初日はALADIを訪問し、利用者と介護者双方へのインタビューを実施。2日目はミラノデザインウィークで「ブリージング・ライツ」プロジェクトを発表したデザインデュオA+Nを迎え、彼らの作品とデザイン手法を参加学生と共有して頂きました。

ワークショップの期間中、学生たちは自分の選んだテーマと現地調査で得た知見を基にコンセプトをデザインし、最終日にその成果を発表しました。全プログラムを通じ、ケン・ビレスは自身がED²で使っているデザインプロセスを用い、学生たちにコンセプトの方向性や構築方法、プロダクト化に向け如何に精度を高めるかといった指導を行いました。これにより、学生たちのクリエイティブ思考がさらに高まったと言えます。

学生たちがアイデアを練る時間はわずか2日間でしたが、ALADIの介護者と利用者との対話に基づく「現地現物」アプローチにより、極めて意義深い成果が生まれたと考えます。ある学生は自転車用空気ポンプを流用した「抱きクッション」を考案。抱きしめると、呼吸のように優しい動きを感じられるクッションです。

別の学生ペアは、ポルトデザインビエンナーレの来場者とALADI利用者を結ぶデジタルコミュニケーションツールを提案。双方からの音をビジュアル効果に変換する接続型スクリーンにより、直感的でインクルーシブな交流を実現します。

特に魅力的だったのは、流木など海岸で拾った素材で作る、縦型フレームに入ったカーテンのような風鈴です。ALADI利用者はその部品に触れて、奏でる音を楽しむことが出来ます。ALADIの長い廊下はあまり活用されておらず病院のような雰囲気ですが、そこにこの作品を設置するという構想でした。

もう一つのコンセプトは、ALADI利用者向けの編み物体験です。これは地味ながらも効果的で、糸の触感を楽しみながら、反復的な手の動きが集中力と落ち着けるリズムをもたらします。今あるもので簡単にできる体験型コンセプトとなりました。

ケン・ビレスの指導のもと、クッションのコンセプトはプロトタイプへと発展し、ALADI利用者によるテストが実施されました。その反応は極めてポジティブで心温まるものでした。

ポルトデザインビエンナーレの主催者は、このコラボレーションの成果に大変満足し、同プロジェクトへの反響は非常にポジティブでした。
