I had never been to Taiwan before, so this trip was both a great experience and a wonderful opportunity to discover a new part of Asia. I had already travelled to China several times, and initially, I imagined Taiwan might feel somewhat similar. I quickly realised, however, just how different and unique it is.
Taiwan is perhaps not the first destination that comes to mind for many international travellers, whether because of its complex political situation or simply because international news tends to shape the way we perceive the country from afar.
After visiting, I believe that is a real missed opportunity. Taiwan revealed itself as a fascinating and incredibly welcoming place, where culture, geography, tradition and modernity come together in a remarkably distinctive way. Above all, it is a country shaped by its people: open, warm and genuinely welcoming.
From everything I experienced during my travels, Taiwan has an enormous amount to offer international visitors, and I would wholeheartedly recommend taking the time to discover it.
From Discovery to Design
Of course, beyond the touristic perspective, there was a very specific professional reason for sending the ED² team, Gaëtan Colibert, Stephan Rasmussen and myself across the world.
Taiwan has established itself as one of the world’s leading centres for boatbuilding and yacht manufacturing. That is fascinating in itself, but what does it have to do with Toyota and Lexus ?
For several years, Toyota has been expanding beyond the traditional automotive industry, developing its vision as a true mobility company. The maritime world is one of the fields in which this ambition is taking shape.
Our own adventure with Toyota Marine began several months earlier, with the Lexus catamaran concept developed at ED². Presented at the last Japan Mobility Show, the project marked the beginning of a new collaboration between ED² and Toyota’s Marine division and opened the door to new opportunities in this fascinating and relatively unexplored field for us.
During our time in Taiwan, we spent several days at the shipyard, working closely with the team, discussing the project and following the development of the catamaran at first hand.
One of the highlights was the opportunity to work with a full-scale wooden model of the boat. Built entirely in wood, it reproduced the different decks, spaces and interior compartments at full scale, creating an exceptional tool for evaluating ergonomics, understanding the spatial experience and identifying potential improvements to the design.
The entire team worked hard to prepare the model, not only as a development tool, but also as a powerful way of communicating the project to our top management. There is something particularly valuable about stepping away from a screen and experiencing a design at full scale: proportions become tangible, spaces can be tested, and ideas can be challenged through direct experience.
The development of the catamaran is still ongoing, and I am very much looking forward to the day when we can finally see this project leave the shipyard and sail.
A great professional, cultural and, above all, human experience one that opened up a new perspective on mobility, design and the possibilities that lie beyond the road.
