Collectible Design - Jean-Baptiste Durand

We recently had the opportunity to interview Jean-Baptiste Durand, a French designer and artist renowned for creating hybrid, dystopian, and techno-expressive objects that blur the boundaries between art, design, scenography, and experimental craftsmanship. His work is distinguished by its intricate complexity, combining high-tech and low-tech materials in ways that defy conventional design categories. Durand began his career in the studio of Mathieu Lehanneur, where he honed the experimental approach that has since become central to his practice.

His creations often appear as though they have emerged from an alternate future—one in which objects are salvaged, repurposed, and reconstructed from discarded technologies to serve new functions in a post-industrial world. The result is a universe populated by mutant furniture, hybrid lighting pieces, and techno-totemic sculptures that feel at once futuristic and deeply handcrafted. Many of his works seem alive—unstable, evolving, and perpetually in transformation—challenging conventional expectations of what furniture and design can be. Yet behind this apparent spontaneity lies an obsessive level of precision. Every project begins with hand-drawn sketches before evolving into meticulously developed 3D models in Blender, each one carefully aligned with the final object that Durand ultimately crafts by hand. As a result, every piece becomes unique and emotionally charged, imbuing technological artifacts with an unexpected sense of vitality, empathy, and presence.

What we find particularly compelling in Durand’s work is his ability to open up a new aesthetic territory through collectible design. His objects offer a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on ecological responsibility and frugality, demonstrating how sustainability can become a source of creative freedom rather than limitation. In doing so, he proposes an alternative design language—one that is both visionary and grounded, speculative yet deeply human.
